The other two Navaratris are celebrated regionally and are known as Gupt Navaratris :

  • In Sharada and Vasanta Navaratri, the 9 forms of Goddess are worshipped. However, during Gupt Navaratri 10 forms of Goddess are worshipped
  • In Sharada and Vasanta Navaratri, only pujas will be done at night. Whereas in Gupt Navaratri puja will be done during day and night for all 9 days.

The celebrations of Navaratri in various parts of India

The Navaratri i.e Sharada Navaratri is celebrated in the bright half of the Hindu calendar month Ashwin, which typically falls in the Gregorian months of September and October.

It starts with Pratipada and concludes on Navami. The 10th Day is celebrated as Vijayadashami.

In eastern and northeastern India, the Navaratri is celebrated as the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura, the demon. In northern and western India, the festival is synonymous with “Rama Lila” and Dussehra that celebrates the battle and victory of Lord  Rama over the demon king Ravana. In southern India, the victory of different goddesses, of Rama or Saraswati is celebrated.

The final theme to all celebrations is the victory of dharma over adharma.

The story of Navaratri

The story of Navaratri is about the great battle between Goddess Durga and the powerful demon Mahishasura. After years of Tapasya by Demon Mahishasura, Lord Bramha gave the boon of Ajeya i.e undefeatable and immortality. However, a woman can defeat him.

Brahma gives boon to Mahishasura

After getting this boon from Lord Bramha, demon Mahishasura becomes very powerful and armed with immortality he attacked the Trilok – hell, earth and heaven and win over all the three. His immense and powerful strength was crushing all the humans and devas under it. The earth was suffering due to the immense sins of the great demon. All the frightened and devastated gods approached the tridevs- Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva for help.

Since the demon can only be defeated by the woman. All the tridevs channelized their energies to create the goddess Durga. Since the most powerful woman can only defeat the demon. The Shakti or Maa Parvati incarnated herself into Goddess Durga. She got the power and weapons from all the gods.

Creation of Goddess Durga by Tridevs

Goddess Durga attacked Demon Mahishasura, who was camouflaging himself in different forms. After a long war for 15 days, when Mahishasura takes the form of buffalo. The goddess Durga pierced his chest with Trishula, which killed the great powerful demon.

Defeat of Mahishasura by Maa Durga
